Fastrack
by
George Kenney
Fastrack is a cross-country car racing game. It's you against the clock, the
course, and obstacles on the course. In Fastrack you're the driver, and your
job is to complete the course from New York to Pennsylvania. Along the way
you'll have the opportunity to earn money and purchase things for your car
that will make your job easier.
Fastrack Game Play
1. The goal of FASTRACK is to travel from New York to Pennsylvania in the
shortest amount of time possible.
2. The game starts with your Porsche in low gear in center screen; at the
top of the screen is a display of your current stats, such as damage,
gas, ammo, elapsed time, etc. At the bottom of the screen is a display
of the last saved game stats and the Course Record Time.
This lower portion of the screen can be toggled between the game stats
screen and the course map by hitting the PgUp key or M key.
3. There are two flags (or markers) which must be captured on each map.
IF ALL MARKERS ARE NOT CAPTURED WHEN YOU REACH THE END OF THE COURSE
YOUR CAR WILL SIMPLY TURN AROUND AND HEAD THE OTHER DIRECTION...the
assumption being that you just overlooked a marker.
These markers are placed in the lower left and right hand corners of
the map display.
3. Your current position on the course is displayed as a RED square. As
you proceed along the course the square will mark your location.
Knowlege regarding your current position on the course is crucial to
finishing the game.
4. As time progresses your car will run low on fuel and you will inevitably
crash into other vehicles and road obstacles. You must find a Gas and
Repair station to remedy these problems. Gas and Repair stations are
placed at different locations on each map. They are identified by a
green gas can icon with a letter G on it.
5. You acquire money to buy fuel and repair your car by blowing up other
vehicles on the road. Traffic flies by fast so be ready. You also
receive additional cash and ammo when you pick up a marker.
6. The game uses both the keyboard and the joystick. To toggle a definition
of game controls for both the keyboard and joystick hit the P key.
This will pause the game and display the keyboard and joystick interface
controls. Hit the P key again to return to the game.
The object of Fastrack is to finish the course in the shortest amount of
time. To finish the game, and have it be automatically recorded, the player
must capture all of the flags (12 total). These flags are always at the
bottom left and right corners of the screen.
When a player captures a flag the player will receive 50 rounds of ammo and
$100.
The player's car will deplete its fuel supply as it traverses the road map and
will accumulate damage as it collides with traffic and road hazards. The
amount of fuel consumed and damage sustained is presented as health meter bars
in the upper left corner of the screen.
There are gas/repair stations placed at different locations on the state maps.
When a player turns into a gas station the player is presented with a billboard
of various repair, gas and material purchase options. These options include:
refuel $50
repair 200
ammo 100/50 rounds
titanium fenders 1,000 (double resistance to collisions)
enduro50 gas tank 500 (double gas mileage)
enduro100 gas tank 1,000 (triple gas mileage)
turbo jump thruster 1,500 (jump over traffic and road hazards)
A player gains $50 for each traffic object destroyed by machine gun fire
while driving.
It is an advantage to save the game immediately after leaving a gas station.
This is accomplished by hitting the ESC key. The program will ask if you
1) want to save the game, 2) if you want to continue playing, and 3) if you
want to load a saved game. If you answer yes to all three you will have
saved the game and you will resume where you left off.
Pressing the P key displays the following help list:
M or PgUp displays state roadmap
N or PgDn displays state roadmap
B maximum roadside graphics
V reduced roadside graphics, greater game speed
C further reduced graphics
X minimum graphics
Z no roadside graphics
F fire machine guns
H toggle horizon view
R reverse direction of travel
T use turbo jump thruster
U toggle update screen info
P pause game and display help screen
Joystick
stick forward increase speed
stick backward decrease speed
button 1 fire machine guns
button 2 use turbo jump thruster
Hints for Game Completion
1 - Save the game often, particularly just after leaving a Gas and Repair
Station.
2 - Get used to noting your position on the map quickly and prepare for
turnoffs early.
3 - If you go by a turnoff you can reverse your direction of travel by hitting
the R key or for the joystick by depressing button 2 and pulling the stick
back.
4 - Get the long range "Enduro" gas tanks as soon as you can afford them.
5 - Be patient, drive fast, and blow up all on coming traffic.
6 - The Turbo Jump Thruster is Awesome. Get the cash and make the dash.
